If you wish to build a successful Internet business, you must manage your time effectively. When most people first start out, they are a one person business without much startup capital. If this is your case, you will need to do everything yourself until your business grows enough that you can outsource some of the tasks involved with your on-line business.
One of the most common complaints for people who operate their own business is that there aren’t enough hours in the day to get everything done. While there is no way to increase the number of hours in a day, there are some things you can do so that you have more working hours in your day.
How much time do you spend watching TV every day? By cutting back just an hour a day and spending that time working on your business, you will gain 30 hours per month, almost an entire work week.
Many people have laptops that they work on while watching television while others have their desktops in the same room with the television. Don’t waste your time or effort trying to work with the television on. While you might think you are working, the television will distract you and it will take three to four times longer for you to accomplish anything. So, don’t try to work and watch TV at the same time. When you are working, that is what you should be concentrating on.
There are so many distractions on-line such as Facebook, Twitter, forums, etc. that it is very easy to spend an entire day without doing anything productive. If you routinely visit sites like these, you must learn to limit the amount of time you spend at each one.
Facebook especially has so many things to do that it is very easy to spend hours playing with all the applications available. While there is nothing wrong with having some fun, don’t use the time that you should be devoting to your business for fun activities when you visit these sites. Instead, do what you came to the site to do, maybe posting on someone’s wall, sending a message to any groups you belong to, etc. and then leave. You can always come back later when it is your leisure time.
Are you more productive in the morning or in the evening? If you are a morning person, get up an hour earlier and work on your business when you are at your highest productivity level. If you are a night person, stay up an hour later working on your business. In either case, you may need to adjust your sleeping patterns so that you get enough sleep.
Talking about sleep, do you get more than you need? If you do, get up earlier if you are a morning person or stay up later if you are a night person. Use the extra time to work on your business.
You will also want to avoid time wasters. Don’t spend your most productive time checking emails. You may want to do a quick glance for important emails at the beginning of your working period and then come back to them when your energy level is lower.
When you are at your most productive, spend a “power hour” working. For one hour, concentrate intensively on the project you are working on. Do not answer the phone or the door. Tell your family members that they are not to disturb you for that hour. Just concentrate totally on the task at hand for that one hour. You will be amazed at how much you can accomplish in one hour every day if you really concentrate on working.
You can easy receive hundreds of emails every day if you belong to a bunch of lists. It takes a lot of time to open, read, and/or delete all of these emails. Save that time by unsubscribing from all but the best lists. If you are not getting quality information or recommendations from someone, why do you want to be on that list anyway?
Only buy a product if it will help you grow your business. Spending the time reading an e-book or installing a script is wasted time if the product will not help you grow or streamline your business. So ask yourself if the product will help your business in some way before you purchase the latest “must have” product. And of course, if you do purchase a product, put it to use right away instead of letting it collect virtual dust.
If you have a few free minutes, don’t waste that time reading emails or surfing the Internet. Instead, put that time to good use.
Make a list of small tasks that can be done in just a few minutes. Then when you find that you have some free time but not enough time to work on a project, use the time to do some of these small tasks.
In just 10-30 minutes you could:
1. Post to your blog;
2. If you have already researched an article, use this time to actually write it;
3. Edit an article;
4. Submit an article to article directories;
5. Add messages to your autoresponder;
6. Read a chapter in the latest e-book you have purchased;
7. Upload articles to your site;
8. Check your site for broken links;
One way of managing your time is to make a list of things you need to do. However, before you start making a list, you need to realize that the list will never work unless you actually stick to the rules that you have set for yourself. So you need to discipline yourself and adhere to your list.
