Internet Marketing Success: Self Discipline

While many people consider self- discipline as punishment, Webster’s definition of self-discipline is “Correction or regulation of oneself for the sake of improvement”. The difference between someone that’s successful and someone that isn’t, is that someone that is successful takes action immediately while unsuccessful people tend to procrastinate and avoid what needs to be done.

Everybody possesses either the knowledge or has access to the information and training required to be more prosperous. It’s not want of knowledge that causes anybody to fail; it’s their inability to employ self-discipline, to follow through and apply the ideas and to utilize the knowledge they already have. The information and the knowledge necessary to build a lucrative Internet business is readily available to everybody. What many people lack is the self-discipline to hone their “research” skills on the Internet, so they can find the information on-line. It requires self-discipline to switch off the TV, log onto the Internet and begin searching for information.

Then, it requires self-discipline to actually use the information they have found. It is so much easier to say, “I’m really exhausted tonight, I’ll start working on my Internet business tomorrow,” than it is to actually begin today. This is when you need to remember the old saying “Never put off until tomorrow what you can do today”. Although our brain tells us we need to take action; it is discipline that tells us to begin right now. We may have a plan to become more successful, but what we actually need is the self-discipline to act today.

It’s an established fact that the mind is most receptive early in the morning. It requires self-discipline to wake up earlier and to read or listen to audiotapes rather than sleeping another hour or two. It requires self-discipline to go to bed early enough so that you wake up and are alert in the early morning. It requires self-discipline to work on your Internet business when all your friends and family are putting demands on your time. And, it requires even more self-discipline to work on your business while all those around you are asking for your attention.

If you want to build a successful Internet business, you need to have self-discipline.

So, how can your discipline yourself for success?

  • Discipline your mind so that when you first wake up, you think about what you need to accomplish that day.  You will have fewer distractions and be      more productive.
  • Discipline yourself to use your time wisely. You’ll never get back any time you have squandered.
  • If there’s some part of your Internet business that you don’t like to do although it needs to be done, do it anyway.
  • If you tend to put certain things off, do them right away instead.
  • If you say you’re going to do something, DO IT.
  • Don’t say you will do something tomorrow instead of doing it today as more than likely you will find an excuse not to do it tomorrow either.
  • You should constantly be disciplining yourself if you want to be successful. As one famous author said, “Small differences in your performance can lead to large differences in your results”.

Internet Marketing Success: Keeping Motivated

Motivation is the driving force that initiates and directs behavior. In other words, motivation is a kind of internal energy which drives a person to take an action in order to achieve something. You must keep motivated in order to build a successful Internet business. Without motivation, you will not have the will to succeed.

Here are some ways that will help you to keep yourself motivated:

  • Face the consequences – If you don’t get your act together, how will you ever get what you want?
  • Reward yourself – By rewarding yourself whenever you reach a set goal, you will be motivated to work towards that goal.
  • Make detailed plans – If you want a specific result, set up specific instructions as how to get that result. You’ll work better if you know exactly what you need to do at any given time.
  • Set short and long term goals – Use both short and long term goals to guide you as to what actions you need to take.
  • Set deadlines - Many people are most productive right before a big deadline and may have a hard time focusing until that deadline is imminent. If this is you, set up a series of mini-deadlines for yourself.  Often, just having a deadline will keep you motivated so that you will complete the task before you reach the deadline.
  • Set challenges for yourself – Challenge yourself to complete a task within a certain amount of time that is less time than you usually devote to that task. For example, if it normally takes you 1 hour to write an article, challenge yourself to write the next article in 55 minutes, the next in 50 minutes, etc.  Not only will you be motivated to complete the article, but you will become more efficient in the process.
  • Be creative – Don’t expect everything to always go the way you plan.  Learn to be creative so that when something does not work, you are motivated to find a way that will.
  • Ask for constructive criticism – Often you won’t realize that you are doing something wrong.  Ask your mentor, mastermind group, or fellow Internet marketers for their input. Once you know you are doing something incorrectly, you will be motivated to improve.
  • Strive for constant improvement – Don’t stagnate.  Each time you accomplish a task, find a better way to do it next time.
  • Make it fun – Work is most enjoyable when it doesn’t feel like work at all. Let yourself have fun working and the positive environment will lead to better results.
  • Make it stimulating –Don’t do the same boring tasks every day. By changing what you do on a daily basis, you won’t dread doing those boring tasks quite as much.

Internet Business Success: Stop Procrastinating

If you are like a lot of people, procrastination may be one of the reasons why you are not more prosperous. Constantly putting off what you need to do results in you becoming further and further behind with everything else as well. Sooner or later something either won’t get finished or you’ll be so short of time that you will rush to complete a project and, as a result, you will not do the best that you are capable of doing.

Here are some ways to help you stop procrastinating.

  • Write Down Your Goals– Writing down your goals helps to keep you organized and to keep you on schedule.You will want to write down your daily goals as well as your long time goals. Keeping a daily goal or to-do list will enable you to see exactly what you need to accomplish every day.  Writing down all of your goals will help keep you focused, make your goals real to you, and help you meet your goal day to day.
    Try to finish everything on your daily to-do list every single day. By doing this, you will be growing your business instead of being at a standstill because you don’t know what you need to accomplish on any given day.
  • Analyze What You Need To Do- Often a task seems so overwhelming that it is difficult to get started.  It’s a good idea to break tasks into smaller parts and then work on just one part at a time. Decide what needs to be done every day.  Your daily goal may be to write one chapter in your new e-book or to test one section of your new script. This way, you are accomplishing something every day and are working towards finishing your project.
  • Prioritize- Take a few minutes everyday before turning on your computer to prioritize your tasks for the day. Once you have identified what are the most important things that you need to do that day, work on them first.Don’t start anything new until you have accomplished each task in the order of its importance.  Avoid the temptation of skipping a task because it is not as much “fun” as another task further down on your list.
  • Worst First – If you have something on your to-do list that day that you really dislike doing, work on that task first.  Not only will this get the most dreaded task completed, everything else that you need to do that day will be easy in comparison. Besides which, it will be much faster to complete a dreaded task when your energy is at its highest level.
  • Eliminate Distractions– While most marketers will tell you one of the benefits of having an Internet business is that you can work from the comfort of your home.  Although this is great for many reasons, working from home also promotes procrastination. This is because of the many distractions associated with any household.  There is the phone to answer, the door to open, the neighbor to talk to, and children or your partner demanding your attention.  Maybe your favorite movie is on the television or there is a soap opera you never miss. Then there is the Internet itself with the many distractions offered by way of forums, information, news or even games.
    It’s up to you to recognize what distracts you, especially those that tempt you the most. Once you can identify the things that distract you, find ways to eliminate them.Set up your workstation where you can work without a lot of distractions. You may want to use earplugs or headphones to block out background noise. Mute the telephone and let any callers go to voice mail.
  • Work in Sections– If you know that you have hours of work ahead of you, it is tempting to postpone starting the project.  So break the project into smaller sections of 45-60 minutes.  Then take a 5-10 minute break.  Use your break time for pleasure, work on something else for your business, answer e-mails, or just get away from your computer for a few minutes. You’ll come back refreshed and more willing to tackle the next section of your project.
  • Accountability– One of the problems of owning an Internet business and being your own “boss” is that you aren’t accountable to anyone other than yourself.  Besides which, you have no real deadlines. If you don’t finish a project, it is easy for you to extend the time frame in which to complete your project.
    One of the best ways to make sure that you get things done on time is to make yourself accountable to someone else. This could be anyone, for example, your spouse, a friend, a colleague, or your mentor.  Just tell him/her you are working on (project name) and will complete it by (date).By just telling someone that you will complete a project by a certain date, you will work harder to make sure you complete the project on time. Although in reality you are not letting anybody down (except yourself) if you don’t complete the project on time, just knowing that someone expects you to finish the project by a certain date may be enough for you to complete the project on time.You don’t even have to be accountable to a person as you can write down a date that you will finish a project by, just post it on your desk as a constant reminder.  Having a written record of when a project is to be finished by is often enough to keep you focused.
  • Set Up A Schedule– Set up a daily schedule of what you will do during that day’s work period. Write down everything that you would normally do during that time.  Then assign a time frame to finish that particular task. But be realistic. If you receive 20 emails a day, don’t schedule ½ hour for emails as it won’t take you near that long to go through only 20 emails.  On the other hand, if you are writing an e-book, don’t schedule 15 minutes to write a chapter unless you write extremely fast.  Instead, schedule an hour or two for writing each chapter, longer if you have not yet researched the subject.
    Besides a daily schedule, you will also want to set up a weekly and a monthly schedule.  If you have long term goals, you may want to set up a yearly schedule. Include a completion date for each project in your schedule.  For example, if you are writing an e-book, you might schedule completion of the project by the end of the month.  If you want to write and submit 10 articles to article directories, you might schedule writing an article every day for ten days. Then in your monthly schedule, write in the day that you will submit your articles to article directories.

Internet Marketing Success: Building Credibility

The success of your Internet business will depend on whether or not your prospects perceive you and your website(s) as being credible.  If your prospects think you lack credibility, it will be next to impossible to sell them anything.  And of course, if no one purchases what you offer, your business cannot succeed.

If your visitors view you as credible, they will:

  • Trust you which means they will be more willing to purchase what you recommend;
  • Recommend you and your products to their friends and associates;
  • Listen to you as they will perceive you as an expert in your niche;
  • Be more willing to give you a testimonial.

Studies have shown that most visitors to your website will rate your credibility according to how your site looks. According to BJ Fogg, the world’s leading researcher on web credibility, web credibility is about setting up your website so that your visitors view it as being both trustworthy and knowledgeable.

  1. Show your visitors that you are a real person.  Provide information on how they can EASILY contact you, include an “About Me” page with a picture and a short bio about you, show an image of your product on your sales page, include a picture of your office if it is outside your home and include pictures of your staff if you have any.
  2. Provide links to your Terms of Service, Privacy Statement, Earnings Disclaimer, etc. You may also want to include a FAQ page that answers questions your visitors may have about you, your product, and your business.
  3. Have 3rd party backup for any statements you may make such as a statement of how you helped X amount of people achieve success.  Placing testimonials on your sales page is an easy way to achieve this.  Back up every statement you make on your sales page.  If you say you made X amount of money by using a certain technique, software, or product, show images of your bank statements or Paypal account.
  4. Check your site at least once per week for broken links.  If you have broken links on your site, your visitors will think that your website is not well maintained.
  5. Be sure there are no errors on your site, including spelling and grammar errors.  Even one small error can make your site less credible in the eyes of your visitors.
  6. Studies have proven that the most important criteria of Web credibility is the way the website looks so make sure your website is professional looking. If you are not very good at creating graphics, outsource their creation. Nothing looks more amateurish or unprofessional than poorly designed graphics.

Of course, you must also constantly work at maintaining your credibility. You do that by:

  • Only promoting products that you have personally used or thoroughly reviewed;
  • Never recommending something just for the commission;
  • Producing quality products;
  • Always overdelivering;
  • Never misrepresenting anything to your prospects and customers;
  • Always doing what you say you will do;
  • Answering any support questions promptly;
  • Providing your contact information;
  • Never being rude no matter the provocation;
  • Always being consistent;
  • Standing behind your word;
  • Promptly delivering your products;
  • Standing behind your guarantees;
  • Providing the best customer support possible.

Internet Marketing Success: Leveraging Your Time

Before you can leverage your other resources and assets, you need to learn how to leverage your time more effectively. If you are spending time on anything that doesn’t help you reach your goals, you are not leveraging your time as well as you could.

The best way to leverage your time is to automate as many tasks as possible. When you master the art of leveraging your time by utilizing automation to turn one action into a massive effort, you free up time to concentrate on money-making activities for your Internet business. Besides which, those who learn how to leverage their time work less and earn more.

Most Internet business owners spend their time doing a number of tasks every day.  Some of these are so important that the marketer can only do them him or herself. However, many Internet marketers, especially those just starting out, spend time on activities that should not be done at all such as reading every email in their inbox, joining a forum and then reading every forum post or visiting every website they receive a promotional offer for.

You need to take a look at what you do every day and cut out activities that do not help you reach your goals, automate as many tasks as possible, and outsource as many mundane but time consuming tasks as possible.

If you do not have the experience or ability to do certain tasks, you are wasting time trying to do them yourself.  If you cannot write, why spend hours trying to write an article when you can outsource it for less than $10? If you are not a graphic designer, why spend days creating a header graphic or e-book cover that obviously looks like an amateur created it?

By wasting time trying to do tasks that you are ill equipped to do, you are not leveraging your time effectively.  If you are a new marketer, you are probably thinking something like “I just don’t have the money to spend on outsourcing”.  But, think about what your time is worth and then think how much time it will take you to finish that task.  If it takes you 5 hours to write an article which will cost you $10 to outsource, doesn’t it make more sense to outsource it rather than work for $2 per hour? Besides which, you could spend those 5 hours doing something more productive that will make you more money than that $2 an hour.
